The LCME is responsible for accrediting medical education programs leading to the MD degree in the United States and is jointly sponsored by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) and the American Medical Association (AMA).
LCME accreditation is a voluntary, peer-reviewed process of quality assurance that ensures that programs meet established standards and engage in continuous quality improvement through self-study and reflection. The LCME publication, “Function and Structure of a Medical School,” details the expectations for medical education program performance and is available for download from the LCME website.
